The stability of methane hydrates at continental margins faces a significant threat from rising ocean temperatures. This scenario could potentially trigger the release of substantial (yet unconstrained) amounts of methane into the overlying water column and eventually into the atmosphere. Within marine sediments, the biologically mediated process of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is critical in mitigating such benthic methane discharge. However, AOM is not always ‘super’-efficient. There are two reasons why.

Considerable quantities of soil organic carbon (SOC) can be sequestered in agricultural land by adopting practices broadly known as carbon farming. Two main options for SOC sequestration in arable land are to (1) replace annual crops for perennial crops such as grass or forage legumes, and (2) grow cover crops. Experimental evidence shows that additional perennials and cover crops in temperate agriculture can sequester ca. 300-600 kg C/ha/year.

The multi-temporal high resolution spatial database provides an indispensable dataset for geological study and morphologic evolutions analysis. However, due to its involvement in military and national security issues, the technology regarding to geomorphologic data acquisition has become a mysterious and arduous project in the traditional surveying and mapping field. As a result, geoinformatic datasets are difficult to obtain or inaccessible.

Fine natural sediments like clay particles are transported in rivers and deposited in riverbeds. Historically, these particles are considered wash-load, i.e., passive material that travels in suspension, having little to no interaction with other river processes. However, river water enters the porous beds, bringing with it those fine particles that are filtrated and immobilized in the riverbed. Over time, they accumulate and clog the riverbed voids, dramatically attenuating hyporheic exchange and diminishing the connection between surface and groundwater.

The detection of metallic particles in the subsurface, e.g. for ore exploration or investigation of landfills, has been an important field in applied geophysics for several decades. Because of the high conductivity and high polarizability of metallic particles, geophysical methods using electrical properties, especially induced polarization, are highly relevant.

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers are a class of lipid biomarkers that in recent decades have been show to act as paleoclimate indicators in lake sediment. New research and recent methodological advances have shown that the 5’ methyl branched tetraether index (MBT5’Me ) correlates well with temperature, however its use as a paleoclimate marker requires the development of calibration estimates for the areas under investigation.

Groundwater and surface water are a single complex and interacting system depending on geological, climatic, and hydrological factors, among others. In the context of global change, anthropic activities are an additional forcing in the groundwater-surface water interaction (GW-SW-I) systems, which may impact water quality, quantity, and ecosystems health. A commonly impacted variable in lakes is water level. Several lakes worldwide have shown water level decline trends and total desiccation in recent decades, particularly in arid regions.

The abundant precipitation of westerly origin controls the climate on the western side of the Andes Mountains with non-seasonal rainfall (i.e., year-round) from 55° to 42°S and seasonal rainfall pattern from 42°S to 30°S, associated with a seasonal drought at latitudes <42°S. As a result, the vegetation change (ca. 42°S) from Temperate and Valdivian Rain Forest to North Patagonian Evergreen Forest, a vegetation change characterized by a gradual decrease in diversity attributed to lower temperatures as well as changes in precipitation.

Inland waters play an important role in global nitrogen (N) cycling and transport substantial N from land to sea. However, it remains unclear whether, when and why freshwater biogeochemical N cycling has changed in response to human activities, climate change, and other environmental conditions.
